| Upon tossing a rock... |
[27 Jan 2005|01:04am] |
Our friend Carrie (dewkissed) helped me do a little manual labor in the yards today. Scary enough, no? We tossed a particulary large rock over close to an old abandoned well. Water bagan to pour from under the rock. Carrie (God love her) exclaims: "Oh, that must be why the rock was so heavy! It was filled with water!" "Huh," I say "The water is coming from the ground." "Well then, it must be a MIRICLE!" Carrie squeals "If we were pioneers, we would build a church on this very spot!" "Or a broken water line" I said. And the spell was broken. Here I sit, at 1:04 am, and I am still laughing.

| It's Monday Once Again |
[18 Oct 2004|01:55pm] |
|
Somehow the arrival of Mondays still catch me off guard, regardless of the fact that Monday happens every week. I have been worn out with renovating my house. I put my hammock back up late yesterday afternoon after planting a winter garden in the summer herb bed. I plant what eat so it contains spinach, Romain lettuce, and broccoli. I'm sure I'll have a time keeping Carrie and the chickens out of it. Speaking of chickens, I must try and dump some more out in my neighbor's yard. I have too many, and he needs more chickens in his life, I'm certain of it. I'll be putting up peas, mustard, squash, and bell pepper tonight. I might make a pan or two of brownies while I'm in the kitchen and bring them to work.

| Out My Window |
[12 Oct 2004|08:45am] |
|
Out my window right now is a crew of migrants following the tomato season up the Eastern Coast. They will be here for two more weeks, then they will be gone one evening after our last harvest to North Carolina and Virginia. They move confidently in the field, tossing buckets of ripe tomatoes up to the man on the trailer in time with the "ranchero" music blaring from the van. However, when I see them in the stores downtown, they are shy. Eyes downcast, shuffling in and out of the aisles, trying not to be noticed. They are in their element right now. More boxes, more money. I wonder how many more people depend on the checks I write each week. I figure evey tenth tomato box pays for a meal and maybe a treat for someone 1,000 miles from where I sit right now. I know Emiliano lived mostly all over Mexico, he was a truck driver. His wife and children haven't seen him in 3 years. Andrez was a farmer down in Chaipas with 20 acres of corn, 5 cows, and 10 goats. He drinks heavy here. His nephew says he never touched a drop back home. Sebriano was a taxi cab driver in Mexico City. He's seen it all. He drives the van to and from work. Jesus, or "Chewy" as we knew him, left last year after being a permanent fixture since as long as I can remember. Chewy never met a stranger nor did Chewy ever met a road he couldn't walk. He'd strike out from anywhere, to anywhere. I'm sure somewhere in Durango, Chewy's walking.

| First Entry |
[11 Oct 2004|10:02am] |
|
For those of you who do not know me, I am Haley. I am the friend of Carrie and often the partner in crime, so to speak, in her photo adventures. She has hounded me for quite some time to get this journal going. I will try and give you reading this a "slice of life" view into my world, and perhaps some images if Carrie will be so kind and so provide them. As for right now, I must be off. The world of produce and payroll is calling.
